SPIRITUAL DIRECTION
WHAT IS SPIRITUAL DIRECTION?
Spiritual direction is an intentional relationship in which the directee meets with a spiritual director to explore his or her spiritual journey in a confidential, and safe environment, free of criticism. Spiritual direction is not directive in the sense of telling the directee what to do; "direction" is about listening and paying attention to the ways in which the Spirit is working in the directee’s life. It is the Holy Spirit who is the director, and we listen together for His guidance. The spiritual director is not a mental health professional; not a counselor or therapist. Spiritual directors are mature Christians who help others discern what the Holy Spirit is doing in their lives, helping them cultivate intimacy with God, not solve psychological problems.
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR?
A spiritual director walks alongside others as they seek to deepen their relationship and intimacy with God. Learning to discern his voice and direction, we explore questions like: "Who is God? How can I discern God's voice? How will I be transformed as I grow in relationship with God?" People may go to a therapist seeking help with emotional or mental burdens, or they may need help with building intimacy in their marriages. A spiritual director, however, focuses on a person's relationship with God, helping them move toward greater intimacy with God. Spiritual direction can be a safe place of exploration for those who feel displaced from the church or disconnected from God.
WHAT HAPPENS IN SPIRITUAL DIRECTION?
We begin by preparing our hearts to listen. We want to quiet ourselves through prayer, scripture reading, silence, etc. in order to become more sensitive to God’s presence.
You choose what you’d like to share of your experiences. Maybe a spiritual issue you’ve been struggling with or encouraged by; something you are learning or wanting to explore, or perhaps an issue of discernment and direction. It’s beneficial if you prepare yourself in advance for each session.
Proverbs 20:5 says: “The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out”. We listen with you as we discern together how God is at work in your life cultivating His relationship with you and fulfilling His purpose for your life. As we ask questions and listen in God's presence, the hidden things of the heart often come to light.
What happens next is determined by the need that arises. Dialogue may be sufficient, followed by prayer. Perhaps we’ll reflect on relevant passages of scripture, some instruction on helpful spiritual exercises, the extending of forgiveness toward others, or expressions of gratitude, etc., as the Holy Spirit directs.
